Have you ever felt that spark of joy when you find an outfit that not only looks amazing but feels just as good?

Now, imagine if that same outfit could also make a difference to the planet. That’s exactly what I strive for: creating re-wearable event wear that’s not only stylish but also reducing landfill.

Slip Dress design by Lucy Laurita

You may recognise her as Gaia, Pachamama, Terra Mater, or simply Mother Earth. Across cultures and time, these names remind us of the nurturing force of the planet we call home. Today, we can honour that connection by making thoughtful fashion choices that care for our environment and, in turn, nurture our own wellness.

What is Conscious Fashion?

Fashion should be a source of joy, not guilt. That’s why I’ve shifted my focus to designing gowns that go beyond single-event use. Each piece in my collection is thoughtfully crafted to be cherished and re-worn, challenging the ‘wear once and discard’ mindset. When you choose re-wearable designs, you’re not only investing in your wardrobe but also contributing to a healthier planet.

Notable women are already embracing this approach. Jodie Haydon, partner of Australian Prime Minister Hon. Anthony Albanese, worked with me to re-style and re-wear her original Lucy Laurita gown, a story that made global headlines for its sustainability message.

The Recipe for Sustainable Style

Let’s talk about blending personal wellness with sustainable fashion. When you wrap yourself in a garment that’s ethically made and designed to last, you’re wearing more than fabric. You are embracing a story of care and integrity. Here’s my formula:

Comfort and Quality: A design should feel as good as it looks, using high-quality materials you’ll want to wear again and again.

Materials: Choose fabrics that love the planet back wherever possible. We have a long way to go with natural fibres in shimmering event wear so in my collection I select surplus durable materials. I also design handcrafted trims from the offcuts.

Ethical Practices: Knowing your outfit was made under fair and ethical conditions makes it all the more special.

The Challenges of Fast Fashion

We’ve all been there, tempted by a bargain piece at the store. But behind that price tag often lies poor craftsmanship, unethical labour practices, and a garment destined for landfill after just a few wears.

Now, picture an alternative: investing in a well-made gown designed to be re-styled and worn time and again. It becomes a trusted companion for countless special moments, crafted with care and respect for the planet. Each wear adds to its story, creating not only a treasured piece in your wardrobe but also a sustainable choice that benefits the environment.

By choosing well, you’re casting a vote for the world you want to live in, one where fashion respects the earth and its people.

Sustainable Fashion Trends on the Rise

Circular Fashion: Designs that can be reused or recycled are the future.

Innovative Materials: Eco-friendly fabrics are reshaping the industry.

Demand for Transparency: Consumers are increasingly asking where and how their clothes are made.

Focus on Wellness: Fashion is now about caring for ourselves and the planet.

Switching to Sustainable Fashion

Sustainable fashion isn’t just about a wardrobe change, it’s a lifestyle shift. By choosing re-wearable designs, you reduce waste, conserve resources, and champion ethical practices.

I believe in the power of garments to carry stories and memories, which is why I encourage re-wearing and restyling. It’s a simple practice that extends the life of your favourite pieces, saves money, and lightens our footprint on this beautiful planet.

Together, let’s embrace a future where fashion makes us feel good – inside and out.

Consumer buying patterns have the greatest influence in driving a mass conscious fashion movement. As a garment designer, I see firsthand the limitations in accessing ethically produced natural materials. Consider how cotton and silk are made, the fabric dyes that wash into our waterways, and the toxic pesticides used to protect garments during shipping. Sustainable fashion is a complex and challenging landscape, but we can start making a difference by stepping away from throwaway fashion.
